Travel Tips - Lodging
Cancellation PolicyMake sure you ask each hotel what their cancellation policy is, as they may be more or less stringent depending on the location, length of stay and time of year you are traveling. |
Credit Card Pre-AuthorizationsBe advised that many hotels will put a guarantee on your credit card for the amount of the entire stay. They cannot actually process the charge until you check-out but a pre-authorization will apply against your credit limit. |
EarplugsTravel with a few pairs of earplugs so you can block out unwanted noises in hotel rooms, airplanes, etc. |
Electronic Hotel KeysSome hotel rooms are configured to require that you insert your electronic hotel key card in a slot by the light switch to activate the lights. Often a credit card or any plastic card with a magnetic strip will also work. |
Fax ConfirmationsIf you make a reservation directly with a hotel, ask for a fax or e-mail confirmation. Use this to verify that all details regarding your arrangements are correct and carry this with you as written proof. |
Hotel SafesWhenever possible, store your valuables in the hotel or ship safe rather than the one in your room. Often, insurance policies will only cover you if the items were stored in the hotel safe. |
Motion SensorsThere are many types of motion sensors that you can use in your hotel room. If anyone enters or tries to enter your room, a motion sensor will both alert you and startle the intruder. |
Noisy Hotel RoomsA sound machine can be the solution to eliminating sleep-disturbing noises. These machines produce continuous white noise that masks other sounds, allowing you to get a good nights rest. |
Time to DryIf you wash your laundry in your hotel room sink, give your clothes as much time as possible to dry. Don't assume that everything will dry overnight. |
