Shopping

Advance Warning

Advise your credit card companies that you will be traveling abroad. Otherwise, they may flag unexpected foreign activity as possible fraud and freeze your account

ATM Cards

ATM cards are a great, relatively inexpensive way to access cash overseas. Check with your bank to make sure your card is good for worldwide use.

ATM PIN Numbers

Many foreign ATM's only accept four-digit PINs, so if your number is longer you should change it before you go.. Also, if you use a word to remember your PIN, memorize it's numerical equivalent as many overseas ATM's don't display alpha characters.

ATM Security

Use extreme caution when using ATM machines anywhere. Note your surroundings and try to use them only in secure daylight conditions.

Bargaining Offers

Often, when a seller makes an offer, they are trying to figure out how much leeway they have with you in regards to pricing. Wait until they make several offers before you propose a counter offer.

Card Limit

Make sure your credit card limit is sufficient for your trip - if not, ask your credit card company to increase it.

Duty Free Shopping

Just because something is offered in an airport "duty-free" store, it is not necessarily less expensive than what's available at home. Do your research before you go!

Foreign Currency

Often, the airport currency exchange counter is closed when you arrive. You may want to purchase some foreign currency from your bank or local airport currency exchange kiosk in advance.

Foreign Purchases

Pack all items purchased abroad in the same suitcase. In the event that customs needs to see your purchases, they will all be together.

Is Bargaining Expected?

In many countries, haggling may actually be expected. Try to find out in advance whether bargaining is appropriate and have fun with it. It is a great way to make contact with the locals.

Make the Effort

When shopping, speaking at least a little of the seller's language can go a long way. If they see you at least trying to make the effort, it can put them in a better frame of mind to deal with you.

PINs

Make sure you have and know your PIN for your credit cards. This way, you can use it at ATM's or get a cash advance if you need to.

Tipping Rules

Try to find out in advance what the tipping 'policy' is in each country you plan to visit. In some countries and situations it is expected while in others, it is illegal!

Voltage Requirements

If you see an electronic item that you wish to bring home as a souvenir, check its voltage requirements. If it is not dual-voltage, you may need a transformer to operate it at home.
