• I have a water purifier that uses the very same technology in a slightly less versitle package that works well for me, however, for a single water purification method, I trust UV above all else. A good filter does an excelent job of clearing the water of floaties, bacteria, and parasites, and chemicals clear bacteria and virus quickly. Yet, according to my understanding, UV is superior for killing all of the above in a short time period. I've used my UV purifier in various parts of the globe, even with floaties, and never been sick from the water it produces. If there's something bad in the floatie, you don't have to worry--it'll be sunburned too badly to cause any harm.
• I bought mine a year and a half ago and I haven't used it for backpacking yet. What concerns me is the fact that it doesn't filter out the visible stuff that floats around in streams and lakes, so I end up using my pump filter instead each trip.
• I ordered one of these after first reading about the product in The Ultimate Desert Handbook. Great product, works well, but a little expensive and it only treats one pint of water at a time.
• Steripen has a prefilter that attaches to a basic 32 oz Nalgene wide mouth bottle to filter out the floating stuff and then the UV penlight fits in the same spot as the prefilter. I think they came out with this last year per request by customers.
