The Grundig M400 is an ultra compact portable radio that covers AM (520 - 1710 kHz), FM (87-108 MHz) and shortwave in two bands: 5.9-10 and 11.65-18 MHz. The M400 features an analog circuit with digital display and has very easy-to-use controls. It's an amazingly thin radio (under 1/2") with a built-in 4 ohm speaker.

SHORTWAVE RADIO

Grundig has been synonymous with shortwave radio since the early fifties, and is recognized as the "state of the art".  Our Grundig radios have been chosen with the world traveler in mind, offering reliability, ease of operation, and features found on much larger (and more expensive) units.

What is shortwave radio?

Shortwave refers to radio frequency, and was designed to broadcast over distances of thousands of miles.  The broadcast signal is reflected to earth by the ionosphere, a layer of the earth's atmosphere that has a unique ability to reflect radio signals that fall within the shortwave frequency (1.6 – 30megahertz).  The signal returns and bounces off the earth to the ionosphere,and back again, allowing shortwave broadcast to travel much greater distances than AM or FM bands.  Because the shortwave signal does not travel in a straight line, it is not limited by mountains, oceans, or other obstructions. Thus, you can be in the middle of the African desert and listen to a shortwave broadcast from Radio Moscow in Russia, particularly at night when the signals are stronger.

How is shortwave different than AM and FM broadcast?

AM, also called MW (medium wave), is designed for local broadcasting. The transmitting strength of AM radio is restricted by the FCC to broadcast over a limited geographic area. This is why we hear local news when we tune in a local AM station.  The most powerful AM stations can typically be received for up to 200 miles.  The frequency range of AM is 530 – 1600 kilohertz.

FM is also a local broadcast band.  FM is a different type of signal known as a "line of sight" frequency, and cannot travel over hills or other obstructions.  It also cannot "bend" to follow the contour of the earth, which limits the distance to which FM broadcast can be received.  Typically, the most powerful FM stations have a range of approximately 100 miles.  The frequency range of FM is 88 – 108 megahertz.

What is the value of shortwave radio?

Shortwave radio allows travelers the opportunity to pick up English-speaking stations that broadcast on shortwave frequencies (BBC, Voice of America, Radio Canada International) when they're traveling in non-English-speaking countries. It's the high-tech equivalent of the "International Herald Tribune"!

Non-travelers can benefit from shortwave radio for different views on world events, and coverage of international events that may not get air time on local, or even national radio or television.
