Warning - Toxic allergic reaction - Review by
Rating
20/100

Warning. After purchasing this shirt I took the tags off and without washing it and lent it to a 19 year old, 5'9'' 180 lb body builder/trainer to wear on their car trip up to the top of Mauna Kea. While in the car driving up Mauna Kea after having the shirt on for 45 minutes, D went into toxic shock and almost died. My husband, an RN was there with him and could do nothing to stop what was happening. They immediately headed back down the mountain to the ER. My husband is a seasoned medical professional. He couldn't figure out why our guest's blood pressure was dropping dangerously low. His mother saw me pull the new tags off the shirt and when in her arms dying, remembered I had said that the shirt repelled mosquitos when I was handing it to her son to wear. They wouldn't have made it to the ER in time to save him, he was fading that fast. She pull the shirt off. Within minutes he began to recover and his blood pressure went back up. So it was the shirt he had an allergic reaction to. It was a very scary situation for all involved. Love the shirt and will keep it. REMEMBER - wash it first... before letting anyone wear it because you never know who is sensitive to the product that was used to keep mosquitoes away. Just a quick FYI, this kid was all muscle, no fat and in perfect physical health. The chemicals embedded within the shirt went straight to the upper muscles including over the lungs/heart area and directly into his blood stream. Most people have body fat, which would offset this type of toxic reaction. Just remember - wash the shirt first and if someone goes into toxic shock (feeling faint, trouble breathing, feeling unwell, drop in blood pressure, cold clammy sweat, not thinking clearly) take off the shirt first. In addition, I also purchased the women's insect shield shirt for myself and had no negative side effects. It would have been terrible if our guest had died. The situation was that serious. Love the shirt. Just wash the shirt first before wearing. Wear it at home first for a few hours to make sure there are no bio-chemical reactions before heading out somewhere in the woods or mountains where emergency services are not available.

<blockquote><em>Response from the president of Insect Shield:</em> We are extremely concerned about the health and wellbeing of our customers. In the almost 11 year history of Insect Shield, we have never had a report of an incident like this which might have been related to the wearing of an article of Insect Shield clothing. We are obligated to report any incident related to our products to the EPA (as this incident will be reported), and to date every incident we’ve ever reported was in the lowest (least concerning) category. Some health professionals have suspected that consumers with an allergy to chrysanthemums – which is not a common allergy – might have a reaction to permethrin-treated clothing, since the permethrin molecule mimics a molecule found in certain chrysanthemums.

We are delighted that the customer made a full recovery. And we are pleased that they liked the shirt otherwise.

Here is some additional background information about how permethrin originated, and how is it used in case you are not familiar. Permethrin has been successfully used in the United States as an EPA-registered product since 1979, with an excellent safety record. Permethrin is used in lice shampoos for children, flea dips for dogs, and various other products, some of which are regulated by the FDA. Additionally, millions of permethrin-treated bed nets are being distributed globally via malaria control programs to help save the lives of people in malaria-risk areas.
